LESSON D

Boos Hamburger

Hilde Boos Hamburger, who was born 1887, became a student and helper of Rudolf Steiner in all the years of construction of the Goetheanum. She didn't try directly to copy Steiner sketches on painting, as much more to fulfill the spiritual way from Goethe to Steiner. She wrote the results of her research in a book that has been published by her son Wilfried Boos: "Die schöpferische Kraft der Farbe" (the creative power of colors). This book edited by "Zbinden Verlag Basel" is already for many years out of print, because W.Boos died before having managed the 4th edition of it.
This book is full of precious comments and quotations from Goethe/ Runge and Steiner.
The most interesting part seems to be the progressive way how the author develops a very original and genuine color circle. She binds the process of painting together with story of the world creation in the Old Testament. That is a series of 4 exercises that we want to work with in following her own paintings out of her book. (We keep therefore the numeration used in the book: 33 to 36).

レッスンD/1

Chaos, " the earth was empty and desert". Grey as an universal but chaotic "non-color"

Light (white) and darkness (black) has been separated. Primary polarity appears.
Please feel it as a process, happening into the Grey.
In a condensation of darkness grey becomes ---> Black
If the Grey is lighting up it becomes "shining" ---> White

Related to some descriptions by Steiner about the "Old Moon", Boos Hamburger wrote about this step:
" A third state appears because the polarity begins to work. We could feel like yearnings coming out. The darkness seems to tone down the light and the light to light up the darkness, as they would present or combat each other."
The so-called "luster colors" by Steiner are born!

レッスンD/2

Exercise 36: Now a true totality can be realized.
"Yellow and Blue mix together producing the Green, "the dead image of the life" (Steiner).....which appears here as the color of our earth, on which plants grow......we could feel it as the center of mankind's evolution, the color of the burial in the Mystery of Golgatha....Over this Green we made the peach blossom, which is the color of the resurrection."
so far Boos-Hamburger in her book.

This color circle brings a new important aspect of Steiner's research in placing the Peach blossom in the middle of all the other colors. Because it is not simply the color of a flower ( the blossom of peach trees) but the color of the human skin. Through the skin color human being are revealing their relationship to death and overcoming the death. Steiner called it "the living image of the soul". In the Third Level of our color school we have already shown how to treat this mystery in a painting way.
But Boos Hamburger's circle doesn't solve in a satisfying way the question how Black and White could be really included into the concert of the other colors. Though in the contrary of Steiner's her circle is a closed one, but Black and White remain placed at the periphery of it and they appear as a tendency or as a classification: on the left the light colors similar to White, on the right the dark colors similar to Black.
The big profit of Boos Hamburger's circle is that she doesn't count the colors (6 by Goethe/ 8 by Steiner) but paints them with soft transitions. They are a process, a way: the Purpur Red becoming slowly Vermillion then Orange etc... She perhaps has been one of the first doing that. A kind of division between Purpur and Lemon yellow remains free at your fantasy. You may differentiate 3, 4 or 5 colors as you please.
